Risk Awareness and Elderly Safety
Recently my spouse and I took a mini-vacation. These trips always take coordination with my siblings and adult children so that I can be sure that my parents have someone to call in the event of an emergency. As a child, I remember more than one vacation being stopped short due to my grandmother calling and needing emergency elderly help. Most often it was her heart, but one time she had climbed on a foot stool to take down her curtains and had fallen and broken both of her wrists. She stayed with us for weeks so that my Mom could care for her.
Fast forward many years and now my parents are much older than grandma was then and I now understand their concerns for her safety then. Others who care for their aging loved ones may not have the ability to take even small getaways because they have no family members around who are able or willing to offer respite elderly help. Certainly many elderly can stay at home with no help, but in many ways they have entered an at risk populace simply by aging. I found a 'Hip Fracture Risk Calculator' online that emphasizes the importance of caution in the elderly. After putting the vitals in for them, both my parents were considered high risk.
Another important issue for those offering emergency elderly help is good records. Joy Loverde offers a free, Emergency Preparedness Action Checklist that can be printed and kept where others offering your family eldercare can easily find it.
